I wonder how many true stories Sudeep Nagarkar has. The fact that most of his novels are marketed as based on true events is getting my nerves. Sudeep, why do you then call your books fiction? Call them memoirs. Memoirs of your Bollywood like unrealistic life.
I picked up this book because of the cover and the catchy title. After all these years reading Indian contemporary fiction, I should have known that the title wouldn’t be related to the story in any ways. It would be such a blessing if Indian authors start writing books as good as their book titles.
The story in You’re Trending in My Dreams is constructed around the tested and successful lines of many Indian books. Take some young characters, give them a dark past, add some dad issues and bring in a non-climatic climax and then BAM! It’s a bestseller. Sudeep Nagarkar has written more than five books and I had expected him to move out of the lucky plot line that every other author is using and he himself has used before.
The characters in the book are so badly crafted that I don’t even remember most of the details about them. Within a week I would probably forget their names too. The characters are your typical neighbour boy and college queen type but what makes them non-relatable is the effort that the author makes to portray them as special and extraordinary. Do you think a college going boy who fled from home and works part time in a cafe to feed his stomach can afford a plane to flash a message on a sky to impress a girl? No right. But in this book, one of the protagonists, Varun somehow manages to pull that off.
There are also many bits in the storyline which felt absolutely unnecessary and didn’t add anything to the plot. It is filled with crappy dialogues and adult references. If you ask me, I will be cruelly blunt that you should never pick this book up. You’re Trending in My dreams tries to be peppy which it actually isn’t. It is a shock to me that a well established publishing house, Random House agreed to publish this book
I gave it two stars – one for the cover and the other for the friendship shown in the plot. It is the one and only good thing about You’re Trending in My Dreams.
